Hi Glittergirl,
You didnt mention if you were a beginner or advanced?
If beginner:
My advice would be not to spend your money on private lessons for the basic steps! If you have the basic steps and you want to jumpstart your improver, or jump from advanced improver to advanced - maybe. Talk to your intructor, see what he/she thinks at that stage.
Some people do improve lightning fast, sure, but I reckon not without practising 5 days a week and some perhaps some generic advantages based on a combo of external factors.
The group classes are where you learn. Individual classes are where you perfect. There are also plenty of good stuff on youtube, and on DVD for the beginner steps ( just be sure its the style your local club teaches - i.e. LA, Cuban, On 2 etc. )
I learned my basic steps in class, but for the left / right turns and the hooks etc, sometimes I found fellows were just expected to 'know it'.
Anywho, if you are finding yourself in that situ then 'Red Hot Salsa: Beginner DVD by Ron Rosario, Bethana Rosario has to be the one I'd recommend for beginner DVDs learning 'on-1'. It says its NY style, but its deffo 'on 1' for the beginner DVD with maybe some variants on the 'on 2'. A little less flashy than some but very slow, very scientific instruction, very understandable. No 'salsa-mysticism'. The counting exercise in the middle could be improved though
Recommend it for anyone really struggling to get to grips with the basics. ( as I was
). Dunno yet about the other DVDs they've done.
Yikes - gone off-topic - sorry - thats the two cents from someone in the 'dancing monkey' category - hope it helps.
If not a beginner:
Find an instructor who's style you like and ask for private lessons. If they are unable to themselves, they will most likely know of someone who will be available locally.
Tc/H.
