It is with deepest regret that we have learned of the death of Lee Wright this morning.

Lee, a very well known and respected teacher throughout the salsa community, died in a car crash in Malaga this morning.

Lee was very popular in Ireland, visiting regularly, and was well known and loved by the Irish salsa community. He will be very sadly missed and our thoughts go out to his close friends, his partner and family.

As more new becomes available we will pass it on here.

This was sent out to the community at large from Susana Montero:

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the loss of our dear friend, Lee Wright, due to a car accident in Spain! Words cannot begin to express the tragic sense of loss that all of us in the salsa community are feeling at the moment!!
Never before has such a tide of sorrow, shock and pain rippled through our salsa community on such a scale; not only here in the U.K., but also in Europe and the rest of the world!!
His loss has been a true shock for everyone concerned! The salsa scene has lost one of its truest ambassadors and one of its best and brightest stars!! Our thoughts and prays are with his parents, his partner and Shelley!!

Lee was an amazing person in every sense of the word; his contagious smile, his cheeky sense of humour... and he possessed one of the most beautiful and biggest hearts that you could possibly hope to meet!!
He brought so much laughter, happiness and joy to so many, many people; not just through his dancing but also through his bubbly, genuine, warm and open-hearted character!!
To be around Lee was to be around joy; and it was a true honour and privilege to have had him in our lives!! The world has truly become a poorer place without him!! We will never, ever forget him!!!

Rest in Peace our dearest Lee!!

Taken from: http://www.thisiscroydontoday.co.uk/latestnews/Salsa-dancing-champion-killed-Spanish-car-crash/article-462445-detail/article.html

A national salsa champion who taught classes in Croydon has been killed in a horrific car crash in Spain.

Lee Wright died in the collision involving three vehicles in Malaga in the early hours of yesterday (Sunday) morning – two days after his 24th birthday.

It is believed that at 2.20am Mr Wright and another British man were travelling to their hotel in the tourist resort when another vehicle hit the back of their car sending them crashing into a car in front of theirs.

Mr Wright, who was sitting in the back seat, was killed instantly, while the other British man was seriously injured,

The driver of the other vehicle escaped with minor injuries but a female passenger, believed to be his wife, was killed.

Two other people were also injured in the crash.

Mr Wright was a popular figure on Croydon's dance scene and had been a salsa instructor at the Crobar before the venue shut down earlier this year.

In 2007, he and dance partner Shelley Cook were the UK National Professional Champions.

The pair also experienced success on the continent after winning a silver medal at the European Salsa Masters Championships in 2006.

Internet groups have been set up to pay tribute to the dance instructor, who had flown to Spain to celebrate his birthday.

One friend, Robert Saunders, wrote on the Facebook tribute site: "Such a happy, genuine, lovely person, such a loss.

"I can still picture him when he was just getting into salsa, happy, enthusiastic and full of fun.

"It was obvious he was going to become a good dancer, but more than that it was immediately clear what a great person he was."

Another poster, Fintan Lawler, described Mr Wright as having an "infectious" personality.

He said: "Words seem so inadequate at a time like this to express the shock and sadness at such a tragic loss.

"Lee was a truly fantastic person, his love of life, fun and dance was infectious and his teaching was inspirational."

A message from Shelley:

Firstly, Lee's family and friends would like to thank you all for your overwhelming response and support. It has been a great comfort. We are focusing on arranging the best possible celebration of his life, for everyone to talk about and remember what he meant to each of us. Both the church service and the celebration afterwards will be open to everyone. We hope that friends from throughout every part of Lee's life can come along to share his day.

THE CHURCH SERVICE

Lee's Church Service will be open to all who wish to come, close to his family's home in Kent. We are still in the process of choosing a suitable church, but we would like to let you all know the date and approximate location so that you have as much notice as possible.

Details so far are:
*Tuesday 25th November 2008*
*An afternoon service is most likely, probably around 1430*

Further details will follow. We hope to gain an accurate idea of numbers attending as soon as possible so would appreciate your response via email only if you are unable to respond via Lee's Remembrance group on Facebook.  If you are likely to find it difficult to make it to the church service, you might like to come to the celebration of Lee's life later that day.

We would like the dress code for Lee's Day to be Bright and Smart, just like him…

THE CELEBRATION OF LEE'S LIFE

We would like this to be a unique, remarkable event for a unique, remarkable person.
Everybody who loved Lee will have the chance to contribute if they would like to, such as a reading, a poem, a song, or simply telling us what Lee meant to you. Please see below on how to contact us for that.

Please feel free to attend for as little or as much time as you would like. The celebration venue will be available all afternoon and evening after his Church Service.

This will not be a salsa event. We will hold other events to dance for Lee, in different locations around the UK, so that everyone can do something in their own way, when the time is right. This celebration will be our chance to talk about Lee, to see pictures and photos of him throughout his life, to remember the fun and laughter he gave to us all, and bring together all the people who love him.

We understand that it may not be possible for you all to make it on the day. Please be assured that this will not be the only event we will hold for Lee and there will be other opportunities. If you prefer, send us some words that we can either pass on to Lee's family, or print out, or read out on the day. Every email, facebook post or other message that we have received will be printed and made into a book for his family and others.

*Participating*
We hope to take the time for everyone that wishes to, to be able to say something in their own way. Please let us know in advance if you would like to participate in the ceremony, so that we can accommodate as many friends as possible.
We would prefer to hear from you by Wednesday evening (19th November) so that we have time to plan everything accordingly.
