I  like  it!!! yoink

The schedule is great! 6 classes every hour! That should definitely ensure that the classes are not overcowded and managable. Great choice for all levels. The only comment I can make that may be it is worth putting some classes for guys when there is a ladies styling class. It's often the case that most girls (or half) would go to ladies styling class and then all other classes have girls shortages. Having a guys class might even it out? Overall the schedule looks impressive and I am really looking forward to it!
Nat replied on 04/06/2009 @ 15:43

Hi Nat,

The reason we dont put on something for the guys is that the ratio of women to men tends to be 2 to 1 and has been the case at each of the past events. We try to balance everything our so as to cater for as many people as possible. We dont always get it right and we hope we have put on enough variety to keep everyone busy.

Glad you like it.

Mark.

Hi Mike,

Would it be possible to attend just 1 or 2 classes? Thanks!

Jenya replied on 14/06/2009 @ 20:38

Hi Mike,

The timetable is well thought out, especially Sat morning ( where its nice to have a good choice of improver stuff to relax + have fun with ).  Kudos.  Cool    Hillarys class on Friday could be swamped - so I hope its a big room!

One general comment - its a thing I've noticed in a lot of the timetables, not just this one, is they say improver, intermediate, advanced etc, without really spelling out the pre-requisites.

Beginner/intermediate/improver levels tend to be a bit of a grey area.  e.g. for some clubs, a beginner is someone who has done 3 classes -then is moved to improver.   To others a beginner has completed a 8-10 week course.    Likewise improver/intermediate ( maybe not advanced   are a little out of sync.

I've been to some improver classes that beginners could happily attend, some intermediate which isnt too taxing for improver level.    When going to congresses there is always a bit of puzzlement e.g. "Gee that sounds like something I'd like to try but would I be out of my depth?".

Anywho my suggestion ( for maybe next year ) would be to include a link along the lines of "what we mean by .../what you should be familiar with before attempting..." section.   It would be the first salsa site I've seen that would include it and would I think be helpful to people - it sure couldnt hurt Tongue out

Hey Hugh,

We actually hand out a programme to every attendee that includes a definition of what each level means and what you are required to know before taking the class so we have it covered

Hi Jenya

Due to the large number of people attending the weekend and the fact that we have 6 classes per hour monitor we do not sell passes for individual classes as it would be too difficult to manage. We offer full weekend passes, day passes and evening passes, however, bookings have now closed for full and day passes.  Sale of evening passes will stop on Wednesday evening (17th)

Please note, NO tickets will be on sale at the event.

Welldone to salsa school crew, was great weekender!!...well organized, great classes, great atmostphere.

Marchant and Davina and YeMambo were tops.

Only criticism the bar, not enough barmen

JoeyRamone replied on 22/06/2009 @ 08:07

Yeah, I agree with JR, same comment for the barmen - hard on them and us.

For me Wynn Morris / Nelson were ace, but every intructor I went to was full of life and happy to be there - that kinda thing can be quite infectious

Congratulations on an excellent, well organised event.   I now understand the hype. Cool

I see 6 classes of "advanced On 1".. are these classes going to have the same content/steps ? will help us decide if we can skip 5 of them if we attend one..
shagan replied on 13/06/2010 @ 12:14

Hi Shagan,

No, each class will be different, in fact there should be little to no similarity between any of the classes at the weekend.

Also just to let everyone know we have uploaded a final version of the timetable to http://www.irishsalsaschool.com/Timetable.aspx

Mike replied on 13/06/2010 @ 14:56

Two "Rueda for intermediates" ?    Should be fun

Hugh1a replied on 14/06/2010 @ 13:13
Good post Shagan, it's a frequent dilemma-what exactly does intermediate partnerwork or advanced cuban shines or improver leading and following mean i.e. what are you going to see/experience/learn. One way to address this would be to have the instructors take a 30 second to 1 min video and upload it. Another way would be a brief description in the advance programme of what is intended for each lesson. Any other ideas?
Jak replied on 14/06/2010 @ 13:17
Jak, you really dont live in the real world, do you???
Merryman replied on 15/06/2010 @ 00:13
Merryman, shagan identified an issue. I proposed two potential solutions and invited other ideas. Your response was just personal criticism of me. There was nothing of any substance in your response that related to the points I made. If everytime I post something here it's followed by a personal, critical post then that amounts to harrassment. So, I would respectfully suggest that, as I had tried to constructively engage with the issue, that you park your personal opinion of me and debate the issues not the person. I believe that the suggestions I offered are valid because we know that teachers prepare for their lessons and we know that people video the move/pattern/piece whatever at the end. So, why doesn't the teacher do the same when preparing it-30 second piece and easy to email or mms it to the organisers!?! I would challenge you to explain why what I have proposed is not worthwhile or not possible.
Jak replied on 15/06/2010 @ 16:58

probably because most moves are less than or about 30 seconds to 1 minute long, and if people had a clip of it, they wouldnt need to go to the class or the congress for that matter... they would essentially be giving their services for free. also, it would be an administrative headache. plus classes are dynamic, sometimes moves need to be altered to suit the class on the fly, also because im sure teachers would like to use the same moves in different places, if there were clips of them going around, they wouldnt be able.

some teachers will adapt to the class, and some will stick to their guns and teach at the level they intended. Possibly the easiest solution, is at the beginning of the class, for the teacher to show what they are about to teach, and then let people decide if they are able for it /want to do it or not.

tom doherty replied on 15/06/2010 @ 17:08
Tom, I'll go with the idea that the teachers could show what the class will be about-it's a good idea and should be part of every class but I don't buy the argument that putting up a summary video would mean that no one would go to the classes or the congress. You still need to learn how to do what is being taught-I think you'll agree that it is a challenge when looking at a congress programme to figure exactly what you'll be getting in the lessons especially if you are new to the scene or havent experienced certain teachers before.
Jak replied on 15/06/2010 @ 17:36

everyone is different, id have no trouble learning from a clip. if i had 30 seconds of each of what, like 60 hours of classes, thats about 30 hours of class. thats about 25 DVDs worth of learning for free. i dont think id pay for a ticket, id just go to the parties and show off all my fancy moves to the suckers that paid for what i got for free.

we will agree to disagree on this one Jak, i dont think its a good idea, you do, and neither of us will be convinced otherwise, so lets leave it at that

again, everyone is different, ill know within about 30 seconds of lookin at a time table, what if any classes i will be taking at any event. the only difficulty id have would be if there were 2 things on at the same time i really wanted to do. but im a bit of a veteran. i know its not the same for everyone.

tom doherty replied on 15/06/2010 @ 18:41

Tom-I have no problem agreeing to disagree but your example is based on your maths and they need some serious improvement as you say that 30seconds of 60 hours of classes is 30 hours and equal to 25 DVDs. So, I've explained below how the calculation should be done:

60 hours of classes=60 classes

30 seconds per class=30x60 seconds=1800 seconds

1800seconds=1800/60minutes=30minutes

Therefore, maximum of 30 minutes on a DVD-not 25 DVDs. Also, if there are 3 levels then more logical that the rela benefit accrues from learning at your own level. Therefore, while there's a possible 30 minutes of video there's really only about 10 minutes that's applicable. Am happy, as I said, to agree to disagree. Peace and dance!

Jak replied on 15/06/2010 @ 19:28

so thats why im always early...

lol , i was exaggerating for fun, but seems the joke was lost, im quite familiar with the concept of time. but thanks for clarifying anyway

regardless, i dont see your idea taking off any time soon and since ive agreed to disagree already, ill leave it there

though you could be on to something... we could create a virtual congress, then teachers wouldnd have to get paid so much
