Our reckless and rowdy roving reporters, Lynnea and Mark were lucky enough to catch up with the one and only Super Mario at the recent MamboCity congress in the UK. Mario kindly agreed to share some of his thoughts with Salsa Afterhours readers…

So Mario, how did you first get involved in salsa and how long have you been dancing now?

Mario: "I started Salsa on July 7th 1998, and it was my best friend who got me into it, the day I broke up after a long relationship."

With a memory like that no wonder you remember so many moves! I bet you couldn’t have imagined where it would all lead to back then… What is it that attracted you to salsa from the start? What do you most enjoy about the salsa scene?

Mario: "I love the atmosphere, the music, the people and the fact that there is no Racism, Sexism, Ageism or any of the other “ism's”... I like all that. You don't have to understand the language to dance it. Beautiful."

You have been spotted at more than your fair share of congresses, how much of your time would you usually spend attending congress as opposed to teaching locally?

Mario: "I have been very lucky with what I am doing, so most of my time is spent traveling and teaching… I can be found at one congress or another every weekend, but only teach two days a week, as I don't want to get bored of it teaching everyday."

Do you find it difficult to balance a home life with so much traveling?

Mario: "Home Life......what’s that ???"

By now you are a well-established role model for many salseros around the world (including Salsa Afterhours members) - is there anyone in particular who you look up to?

Mario: "I have many role models for various reasons, which I won't get into, but I could always name a few people… Mr Edie Torres, Frankie Martinez, Susana Montero, Leon Rose, Nelson Flores, Ismael Otero, Griselle Ponce, Salsa Brava, Edie and Al and so many more… "

We all know you as the “Million Moves Man” ...... where do you get your inspiration for making up new moves?

Mario: "I just love social dancing, and all my moves are made up by mistake, believe it or not. It all just happens on the dance floor. Believe me, it’s not me dreaming them up, or sitting in airports and drawing pictures, contrary to what a lot of people think.  "

Well they are the best mistakes we have ever seen! You have already achieved so much in your time dancing, is there anything else you wish to do in the world of salsa?

Mario: "I want to be able to travel to all the countries that have salsa, and with God's grace, I am heading in the right direction. When I am done in this field I want people to remember me as that fun guy who loved what he did, just dancing and having fun."

Well I think it’s safe to say that’s how we think of you in Ireland! Is there any other style of dance you have considered learning?

Mario: "I have always wanted to learn tango but, having tried it a few times, I just couldn't keep a straight face...... I’m told I smile too much for tango. But one day, if my body and age permit, maybe some jazz."

You have seen the salsa world from many different angles do you have any pet hates within the salsa world?

Mario: "The one thing that comes to mind is POLITICS. I just hate that stuff.... why can't people just get along and enjoy what they do, like when they first started?  Why not let people who are going to take classes decide if they like them or not, instead of (teachers) talking badly about one another just to get a few numbers in their classes. I hate that stuff..."

Finally, Mario, a man with your wealth of experience and talent must have a few tips for people just starting out?

Mario: "People, believe in yourself. It will happen, slowly but steadily, but only if you practice, practice, practice… and not at home with one partner, but socially with everyone. Don't forget salsa is a social dance, not a competitive sport! Be nice to everyone, and stay away from politics. You know good from bad when you see it, so don't fall for promoters’ words."

"Keep smiling and happy dancing. Love you all."

Our sincere thanks to Super Mario for taking the time to talk to us. You can find out all about Mario and where to find him next on his website www.millionmovesman.com, which also includes details of his range of videos and DVD’s.
